Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of Languages in collaboration with the International Test Center (ITC) held an online seminar entitled “Success in the World of Work with TOEIC Certification,” Friday (12/1/2023) via the Zoom meeting application.

The event, which 159 participants attended, was opened by the Head of UPT Bahasa, Dr. Wisma Yunita, M.Pd, by presenting the Program Executive International Test Center – Jakarta, Silvi Aisah Kusumawardani, as a speaker.
In her speech, Dr. Wisma explained that this seminar was the initial activity for initiating cooperation in implementing the TOEIC test at UNIB. Through this seminar, it is hoped that it can disseminate information and understanding among the UNIB academic community and the general public about TOEIC and its benefits, especially for UNIB students and graduates who will enter the workforce.

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a test to evaluate the level of English language proficiency in an international environment. TOEIC is a reference for various universities, institutions, and recruiters from international companies.
Different from IELTS and TOEFL, TOEIC is used as a requirement in applying for a job while TOEFL and IELTS are used for academic purposes such as continuing Master and Doctoral studies.
“Both are English proficiency tests, but are used for different purposes. TOEIC will be very appropriate for vocational students at UNIB such as Diploma III students,” said Dr. Wisma.

Dr. Wisma added that currently more than 1000 companies and governments in the world use the TOEIC test as a requirement for employee recruitment. The validity period of the TOEIC certificate is 2 years.
There are four types of test materials on the TOEIC test, namely reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The materials are grouped into two types of TOEIC tests that can be taken separately. The two types of tests are the TOEIC Listening and Reading Test and the TOEIC Speaking and Writing Test.
“We would like to thank ITC Jakarta for taking the time to fill this seminar activity. Hopefully, this collaboration can continue and be implemented in the form of the first TOEIC test at UNIB,” said Dr. Wisma.

The seminar was moderated by Caroline Ito Hutahuruk, a volunteer from the Faculty of Economics and Business, UNIB. The 159 seminar participants were not only students but also teachers and English practitioners from Bengkulu and outside Bengkulu such as from Jambi, Bangka Belitung, and South Sumatra.
The participants were very enthusiastic because the event was free of charge. They were also given e-certificates for their participation in this activity. [Report: volunteer. Editor: Purna Herawan/Public Relations]
