5 students of UNIB successfully won Gold Medals at the 2023 World Invention Competition and Exhibition (WICE) international event. This competition was held in a hybrid manner, online via Zoom app and offline at the Malaysia Allied Health Sciences Academy (MAHSA) Malaysia, on 22 – 26 September 2023.

The five outstanding students are Meutia Tri Lestari and Fisabily Layla Annisa from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) collaborating with Afra Wafiqah Azhar, Faruqi Rafifah Huwaida, and Zaza Nurahmadanti from the Pharmacy study program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA).

For your information, the 2023 World Invention Competition and Exhibition (WICE) was attended by 488 participants from 20 countries, one of which was Indonesia. Even though the level of competition was very tight, the UNIB Student Team led by Meutia Tri Lestari was able to become champion by winning a Gold Medal.

At this event, the Team brought an innovation in the form of a body scrub cream with red algae extract entitled “Innovation of Agarose Cream Extract Formulation as An Antioxidant Tested Using The DPPH Method”.

The innovation displayed by UNIB students is related to the widespread use of skincare in the industrial era 4.0, where many people are aware of taking care of themselves using skincare.

Along with the development of information technology and the increasing interest in skin care, entrepreneurs are also competing to produce innovations and skincare that can be accepted by the market (society, ed).

Observing these conditions, the five students had a desire to innovate by using red algae extract as an ingredient in making high-quality body scrub creams. Finally, the five UNIB students, who were both based in the health sciences, collaborated to produce innovations and then dared to take part in the WICE 2023 event.

They chose red algae extract as an ingredient in making body scrub cream not without consideration. They know that red algae is a type of plant that can improve skin quality by regenerating cells, helping open skin pores to improve skin cleansing performance because of the antioxidant content it contains.

During the judging, the innovation displayed by the UNIB Student Team received appreciation from the jury and the jury hopes that this innovation will continue to develop, and be continued until this work can be used in various circles and sold on the market.

The hopes expressed by the jury at the WICE 2023 event are the same as what the five UNIB students hoped for. They don’t just want to win the competition, but hope that this innovation will continue to be developed, so that the benefits can be felt by everyone.

Hearing information about the success of the five students, it was not only the leaders and staff of FKIK and FMIPA who were proud and happy. The Rector, Dr. Retno Agustina Ekaputri, S.E, M.Sc and Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Candra Irawan, S.H, M.Hum, and the entire UNIB academic community are also proud and appreciate this success.

“We have conveyed this information to the management and leaders, especially the Rector and the Vice Rector for Student Affairs, who are very happy and proud and really appreciate the success of the five students. “The hope is that this success can motivate other UNIB students to achieve even more achievements,” said Deputy Chief of the Information and Documentation Management Officer (PPID) of UNIB, Dr. Yarjohan.[web-fkik.
