Magister of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), the University of Bengkulu, in collaboration with Magister of English Education Study Program, Syiah Kuala University (USK) Aceh and the University of New England-Australia, held an international conference in a hybrid manner, offline and online, Saturday (11/25/2023).


The conference was the 4th International Conference on the Teaching of Language and Literature (ICOTEL) in Conjunction with the 1st Collaborative Conference on Rhetorical Patterns of Texts in Indonesia and Malay World, an annual routine agenda for the Magister of English Education Study Program, FKIP UNIB.
The conference was held offline in the Hall of FKIP building and online using the Zoom meeting application. The theme is quite relevant to current conditions, namely “Expanding and Disseminating Research in Language Teaching and Rhetorical Patterns.”


The Coordinator of the Magister of English Education Study Program, FKIP UNIB, Dr. Iis Sujarwati said that the implementation of this activity is an implementation of cooperation between students and researchers from the Magister of English Education Study Program at the three universities.
“We bring together historians and researchers with experience at the three universities both domestically and abroad. The goal is to provide a forum for discussion, sharing ideas and experiences related to research and development of language learning at the global level,” she said.


The same thing was expressed by the Chief Executive of ICOTEL 4, Dr. Syafryadin. According to him, through this activity, it is hoped that it can establish friendship and communication between academics, researchers, lecturers, teachers, and students to share ideas, experiences, and research findings in the fields of education, literature, and English linguistics, which have an impact on creative and innovative language educators.
“Hopefully this activity can provide enrichment of knowledge to all of us and contribute to increasing the capacity of institutions in developing the tri-dharma of higher education,” he said when delivering his remarks.
This International Conference presented four keynote speakers, namely Assoc. Professor Dr. Zifirdaus Adnan (University of New England, Australia), Assoc. Professor Sally Burgess (Universidad De La Laguna, Spain), Prof. Yazid Basthomi (State University of Malang, Indonesia) and Associate Professor Dr. Wisma Yunita (University of Bengkulu).


Further, the conference has Dr. Diana Barnes (Head of school HASS UNE), Abdurrahman, M.Si, Ph.d (Vice Dean of Academics of FKIP UNIB), Professor Safnil Arsyad (Head of Applied Linguistics Doctoral Program, UNIB), Dr. Irma Diani, M.Hum (Head of the Department of Languages and Arts UNIB), Prof. Asnawi, M.Ed (Head of English Education Department, USK), Nira Erdiana, M.Pd (Secretary of English Education Department, USK), Dr. Iskandar AS, MA (Coordinator of Magister of English Education Study Program, USK), Dr. Dohra Fitrisia, M.Ed (Head of Academic Quality Assurance Team of Magister of English Education Study Program, USK), Dr. Siti Sarah Fitriani, MA (Deputy Chair of Academic Quality Assurance Team,USK), Dr. Iis Sujarwati, M,Pd (Head of Master of English Education Study Program, UNIB) and hundreds of students from various universities in Indonesia.


In his presentation, Assoc. Professor Zifirdaus Adnan, said that research on rhetorical patterns of texts in Indonesian and Malay has experienced very significant developments lately.
“Research on rhetorical patterns of texts (including spoken texts) in Indonesian and Malay has experienced significant developments in the last 25 years, especially in the academic writing genre including rhetorical patterns of research articles (RA), generic patterns of academic presentations, thesis defense exams and the like,” said Zifirdaus.


Coordinator of the Magister of English Education Study Program, USK, Dr. Iskandar Abdul Samad said that this International Conference provided an opportunity for researchers to publish their best papers in reputable journals.
“Presenters who have high-quality papers have the opportunity to be selected by the committee to be included in a book published by a publisher in Australia, a special edition of the Journal of Applied Linguistics and Literature (JOALL) or proceedings,” concluded Iskandar.
