UNIB continues to transform into a superior university on an international, national, and regional scale. Based on the Webometrics ranking in July 2023, UNIB’s position has returned to being in the top 4 best universities in Sumatra, and the top 30 best in Indonesia with a ranking of 27 and 2476 of the 32,000 best in the world.

Chief Executive of the Information and Documentation Management Officer (PPID) who is also Vice Rector for Resources, Yefriza, S.E, MPPM, Ph.D., through the Vice Chief Executive of PPID, Dr. Yarjohan said, Webometrics is the best campus ranking site in the world and in July 2023 this will be a special edition because it marks 20 years of Webometrics managing ranking data for 32,000 of the best institutions from all over the world, including in Indonesia.
The ranking carried out by Webometrics is based on the academic performance and visibility of higher education institutions seen from citations and activity on the institution’s website. This requires the wisdom and willingness of all elements of the university such as lecturers, staff, and students, to create scientific works, and public relations content for the dissemination of information and upload it in electronic publications on the university website.
In the Webometrics ranking, there are three main indicators that are key to ranking, namely visibility, openness, and excellence. Visibility describes how many people know UNIB seen from the number of visits to the UNIB website. Openness shows the extent to which the university website provides good and open information to the public. Excellence measures how much the reputation and acceptance of this university are recognized by other universities. With these indicators, apart from the reputation factor, information accessibility is also an important thing that influences the ranking results.

Webometrics releases ranking results twice a year, in January and July. UNIB’s ranking in the Webometrics ranking continues to fluctuate, in the January 2022 edition, UNIB was ranked 48th in Indonesia and ranked 4087th in the world. Then in July 2022, it was ranked 44th in Indonesia and ranked 3777th in the world. Then in the January 2023 edition, UNIB was ranked 49th in Indonesia and 3843rd in the world, and in the latest edition, July 2023, UNIB was ranked 27th in Indonesia and ranked 2476th in the world.
“This means that if averaged, UNIB is in the top 30 to top 50 of the best universities in Indonesia out of the thousands of universities that are ranked. Even previously, in the January 2015 edition, UNIB was ranked in the 25th best in Indonesia. “For Sumatra level, UNIB is ranked 4th to 5th on average,” explained Dr. Yarjohan hopes that in the future the awareness of all UNIB academics to use websites in various academic activities and dissemination of information will be increased so that UNIB is able to improve its webometrics ranking.
