Indonesian and US Navy Held Seminar of Disaster Countermeasures in “Pacific Partnership”

OFFICE of Partnership and International Affairs (UPT KSLI) collaborated with Faculty of  Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) and Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) University of Bengkulu re-held a seminar on disaster countermeasures and public health which is a series of Pacific Partnership programs, cooperation of TNI (the Indonesian National Army) with the American Army, Wednesday (4/4/2018) in main hall of rectorate of UNIB.

The seminar was opened by Vice Rector of Resources, Dr. Ir . Sigit Sudjatmiko. It is the continuation of academic activity about Humanitarian Assistance (HA) – Disaster Relief (DR) SMEE which was held in the same place last week.

On the previous seminar, the presenters were experts of City and Regional Planning as well as disaster countermeasures from University of Hawaii – US, Prof. Karl Kim, Ph.D and Dr. Oceana P. Francais

This time, there were five speakers who were also experts in their fields, namely Janggam Adhityawarma from AHA Center; followed by Lucy S Maize from USAID; IFRC Representative, Ben Lark; then Warren Acunicus from USAID; and the last seminar material presented by Vivian Deannuntis who is a representative of UNOCHA. The seminar was guided by moderator, dr. Icha Marisadonna who is an academic of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) of UNIB.

Not only students and lecturers, this seminar was also attended by Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Dr. Syahrial; Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Lizar Alfansi; Dean of FMIPA UNIB, Dr. Zulbahrum Chaniago; Vice Dean of FKIK UNIB, as well as a number of invitees from elements of TNI, officials and related agencies in Bengkulu, BASARNAS, TAGANA, PMI, Satpol PP, PDAM and even Telkom representatives.

Vice Rector for Resources, Dr. Sigit Sudjatmiko welcomed this activity and thanked all the parties for trusting UNIB for its contribution to the success of the Pacific Partnership Program, the Cooperation of TNI and the American Army, in 2018 in Bengkulu Province.

Vice Rector hoped that the various information and knowledge about disaster countermeasures  presented by the speakers could be a provision and provide enrichment of knowledge for students in particula and Bengkulu people in general to face disaster since Bengkulu is one of the areas in Indonesia that is in category prone to disaster.

Meanwhile, Representatives from the US Navy, Colonel Caston and Captain David Bretz from the US Army said it was very pleased and honored to share experiences, learning and training with the Indonesian Army, the students and the people of Bengkulu Province in particular on disaster countermeasures.

“This activity is very important in strengthening cooperation between TNI, US Army and Local Government. We are here to come with one purpose, to be together to help each other to protect families and communities from disasters, “said Captain David Bretz who greeted the seminar participants with Hawaiian style “Alohaa”.

As a form of appreciation, before starting the seminar session, Vice Rector for Resources gave UNIB plaque to Colonel Caston and Captain David Bretz as a memento. Then do a photo session together with all the speakers and organizers of the seminar.

Previously, Head of UPT KSLI, Yansen, Ph.D explained, Pacific Partnership is a joint training ground between the Indonesian National Army (TNI) and the US Navy involving local government in health and disaster countermeasures exercises with the main objective to enhance cooperation and friendship and improve the ability of host countries in facing disaster.

To support this activity, Bengkulu University is involved in several academic activities such as seminars and workshop of engineering subject matter exchange (SMEE) : Disaster Resistant Structural Design Construction Practices, and seminar of Humanitarian assistance (HA) – Disaster Relief (DR) SMEE.

In addition to academic activities, sports and entertainment events such as friendly football matches involved Indonesian Navy and American Army at UNIB stadium, and entertainment events with band performance from US Navy in auditorium of UNIB. [eve/Editor:Purna Herawan. Foto : Ngamarudin]
